Home safety guides for family caregivers
Find and fix home hazards before a fall happens
Room-by-room checklists, fall prevention guides, and caregiver planners that turn worry into a clear, prioritized to-do list.
How a guide works
Every resource is a tool, not an article to skim
Most home safety advice stops at a long list of tips. These guides are built to be used with a pencil, one room at a time.
-
Walk the room with the checklist
Each checklist is organized by room and by hazard, so you check one thing at a time instead of guessing what to look for.
-
Mark what you find
Loose rugs, poor lighting, missing grab bars, steps without rails. Tick the box and note the spot.
-
Get a prioritized action list
Findings turn into an ordered list: what to fix first, what can wait, and what needs a bigger modification.
-
Match a product to a hazard, only if you need one
Where a product helps, the guide recommends one tied to that specific hazard. Many fixes cost nothing.

Every resource ends in a prioritized action list.
Not a pile of tips. Not a ranking of products. A short, ordered list of what to do next, with a recommendation only when it answers a specific hazard.
Why Handrail Home exists
Clear steps for a safer home
If you are helping a parent stay safe at home, you are probably doing it between work, errands, and everything else. You do not need more emotion. You need to know what to look at and what to do first.
Most of what exists is either a product review site or a generic list of tips. We wanted something different: instructional tools that walk you through a home, room by room, and finish with an order of action.
We also recommend products, and some links on this site are affiliate links. We tie each recommendation to a specific hazard, and we say so plainly. If a fix costs nothing, we tell you that first.
Handrail Home is for adult children coordinating a parent's home, and for older adults planning to age in place.
Questions
Before you start
Who are these guides for?
Adult children coordinating a parent's home safety, and older adults who plan to age in place. They are written to be practical and to the point.
Do I need to buy anything to use a checklist?
No. The checklists are for finding hazards. Many fixes, such as clearing a walkway or removing a loose rug, cost nothing. Products appear only where they answer a specific hazard.
Do you earn money from product recommendations?
Some product links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them. Each recommendation is tied to a hazard, and the disclosure is repeated in the footer.
Is this medical or professional advice?
No. These are general instructional resources. For health concerns, ask a doctor or occupational therapist, and use a licensed contractor for structural changes.
Where should I start?
Start with a room-by-room checklist, beginning at the entryway and stairs. Finish with the action list it produces and work through it in order.
